Delaware

The Delaware Quilt Documentation Project archived 19th and 20th century quilts at the Delaware Historical Society.

I don't think this is a block I would attempt. I like it but this many small pieces drive me insane. I wouldn't have the brain capacity to actually get this one made.

I really like how it looks though. It's a great looking block.

Cutting

Piecing

Take piece A and B and sew them together. Make 4 sets of these pairs.

Using the remaining A and B create 8 four-patches. You should have pieces that look like this.

On your set of A and B add piece F to the bottom.

Now we will work on putting our corners together using the pieces you just made, C, D and E. Make 4 of these sets for each of your corners.

Now lets make the middle piece of our rows. Use two of your 4 patches, E and F to make 4 of these block sections.

Lastly we will make the center of our block before we piece it all together. Using I and J we will create our center block.

On the back of your lighter colored piece draw a line diagonally across it. Layer with your other piece right sides together and sew 1/4" away on both sides of your line. Cut down your line.

Take your two HST's and layer them with opposite colors touching and nesting your seams. I will be touching J, right sides together and then J would be on top of I right sides together. Draw another diagonal line in the opposite direction so you go across your seam, and sew 1/4" from the line. You can do both sides, but we only need one center square for this block. Cut down your line and open your block.

(Note this was created with gray for visibility, the pattern calls for white)

Now we are ready to piece your block together.

Starting with your middle row, piece it together like shown below.

Next we will do the top row. Piece it together like this.

Lastly we will piece together our bottom row to match this.

Sew your rows together to complete your block.

U.S.A. Map Quilt

With Delaware added we only have 10 more states to add to the quilt.

When I picked the fabric for Delaware I looked at what I had picked for Maryland and didn't think about it being so close to Pennsylvania. If I had looked closer before picking I would have done a white fabric. Delaware just blends in.
